Positive summer feeling, music in the streets and squares of the old town and many events invite you to visit Kranj. We prepared 5 suggestions where and how to spend a day in July in our town.
Visitors are being pampered with breakfast, brunch, lunch and homemade desserts at Brioni and have been for 17 years already. In this café and restaurant, all of the delicacies on the menu are made from fresh ingredients. From bread, cakes, ice cream, natural syrups to entire daily menus, it is all created in the minds and under the watchful eyes of Barbara and Tomaž Polenc. Both the café and the restaurant follow modern trends and perfect them with local ingredients. In the shade of the birch trees it is pleasantly cool in this beautiful ambience and there are homemade lemonades in different flavours or cold brew coffee. New lunch menus are developed every day, impressive with their well thought-out combination of flavours and aesthetic presentation. For breakfast we definitely recommend the Breakfast of Champions with poached eggs, béarnaise sauce and smoked salmon or crispy bacon. The Brioni is a must for all gourmets and is recommended also by the Gault & Millau restaurant guide.
At the tip of the rock on which the old town of Kranj stands high above the Kokra River, there is a popular meeting place for families and fans of good music, especially jazz. In the mornings, the café is a popular spot for young families, as there is a playground and the Pungert children's tower in the immediate vicinity of the café, so kids are never bored at Pungert. On summer evenings there are intimate concerts by great musicians from Slovenia and abroad and you can enjoy them in good company and with a glass of your favourite refreshing drink. The following musicians will perform on Trubarjev trg in July: Duo Nina Virant (16 July at 9pm), David Pavlovits (17 July at 9pm), Petra Polak and Klemen Smolej Trio (23 July at 9pm), Karin Sever and Emil Spanyi (30 July at 9pm) and the Blaž Mencinger Band (31 July at 9pm).
A shop in Post Street in the centre of town is home to the king of noodles, where the best homemade noodles are made, just like our grandmothers used to make them. The dough is prepared as a special mixture of flour and fresh eggs. With the best and freshest ingredients, pasta can be made according to traditional recipes, without water and without additives or preservatives. Stop by the store and see for yourself how sinfully good pasta is made, the kind that will become the star of every soup or the main course.
When you walk through the city centre, you can hardly imagine that there is a labyrinth of underground tunnels under our feet. It was built during the Second World War to protect people against bombing. Fortunately, such a shelter is no longer needed these days, but the infrastructure has been preserved to remind us of the dark side of history. You can visit these tunnels with a tour guide and if you are lucky, you will come across cave animals such as cave locusts and cave orb weaver spiders. There you can also see the exhibition on the history of the Kranj underground and the mineral and fossil exhibition. You can even experience a simulation of an air raid in a reconstruction of the bomb shelter.
- Tuesdays and Fridays at 5pm
- Saturdays and Sundays at 10am
Due to the current situation, tours have to be booked at firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 00 386 4 238 04 50 at least two days before the desired date of the tour. The entrance fee is then paid in Kranjska hiša, Glavni trg 2, which is also the meeting point with the tourist guide.
